Solar panels generate high energy consumption and high pollution? Jan 15, 2019

For a period of time, the sound of photovoltaic solar panels is a high-energy, high-pollution industry: supporters also claim thatChina's photovoltaic solar panel components account for more than 60% of global production, and over 80% of products are sold abroad. It is precisely because of the high energy consumption and high pollution characteristics of the photovoltaic solar panel industry that it has givenChinathe opportunity to become a major producer of photovoltaic solar panels in the world.

 

Is this really the case?

 

In March 2012, the “China PV Industry Cleaner Production Research Report” (hereinafter referred to as “Report”) released by Greenpeace Environmental Protection Organization showed that the average level of domestic PV industry (8 tons of silicon material produced by 1MW silicon wafers, from polycrystalline silicon solar cells) The energy consumption of the entire industrial chain from board to PV system is 1.032~1.658kWh/Wp (refer to the table of energy consumption of photovoltaic industry chain). According to the effective peak hour ofChinasolar panel, the average annual power generation is 1300 hours, corresponding to photovoltaic power generation. The energy recovery period is 0.8 to 1.3 years. Since the life of the general photovoltaic solar panel power generation system is 25 years, this means that photovoltaic solar panel power generation has zero energy consumption and zero emissions in the next 24 years.

 

High pollution is for emissions rather than solar panel production, even if it produces pollutants, it is not pollution as long as there is no emission. In the production of polycrystalline silicon solar panels, a large amount of silicon tetrachloride (a highly polluting highly toxic waste liquid) is produced. If the closed-loop modified Siemens method is used, it can ensure that the waste liquid is disposed of in the closed system, that is, it will not emit any pollution object.
