How to choose solar panels between monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon? Jan 15, 2019

Monocrystalline silicon solar panels have the highest power generation efficiency and can emit more electricity in the same area. It is most suitable for the selection of single crystal silicon solar panels with a small mountable area, but the unit price will be higher. The efficiency of polycrystalline silicon solar panels is second, and the choice of polycrystalline solar panels with relatively large installation area is relatively cost-effective. The lowest efficiency of amorphous silicon solar panels is generally not recommended. (Single crystal silicon solar panels are generally chamfered, and polycrystalline silicon solar panels are generally square)


The solar panel assembly has a size depending on the power, and the power of the monocrystalline silicon solar panel assembly is from 10 to 380 W. The power of the mono crystalline silicon solar panel assembly is proportional to the size of the area. Therefore, when selecting the power, the solar panel assembly of the appropriate size should be selected to meet the installation space requirements. If you choose a polysilicon solar panel with a power of about 250W, then a 5kW system would require 20 panels.


The five parameters of the solar panel assembly are peak power, open circuit voltage, short circuit current, operating voltage, and operating current. The selection of these parameters is very important.


The solar panel is exposed to sunlight (1000 W/m2): 1.the voltage measured without load is the open circuit voltage. 2.the current measured by short-circuiting the positive and negative terminals of the solar panel assembly directly is the short-circuit current. 3 The voltage measured with the load applied is the operating voltage, and the measured current is the operating current. The operating voltage is generally proportional to the open circuit voltage, and the operating current is proportional to the short circuit current. The choice of these four parameters is very much related to the inverter to be selected later. Operating current and open circuit current vary with component power.


Series and Parallel Connection of Solar Panel Components: Multiple solar panel assemblies can be used in series or in parallel, or can be used in series and in parallel. For grid-connected systems, the series is to obtain a voltage suitable for the operation of the grid-connected inverter, and the parallel connection is to increase the output power at the same voltage level.
