Photovoltaic + Transportation Become A Common Practice. Is This The Future Hope Of The Industry? Dec 28, 2018

With the continuous development of the photovoltaic industry, from photovoltaic power plants to photovoltaic fish ponds, and then from photovoltaic curtain walls to photovoltaic backpacks, the application fields of photovoltaic power generation are becoming more and more extensive. In all new modes and new applications, the upsurge of photovoltaics in the transportation field has attracted much attention.

Recently, the construction of a 5 MW PV project in the Guangzhou Metro Yuzhu Depot has been officially connected to the grid. This is currently the largest distributed PV power plant inChinawith metro transportation. It is understood that the photovoltaic project is located in the Yuzhu vehicle section of Line 5, and installs solar photovoltaic power generation equipment in a total of about 70,000 square meters of roofs in the vehicle section, the main maintenance warehouse, etc., using self-sufficiency and surplus power supply mode. It is estimated that the annual average power generation of the project can reach 4.2 million kWh, which can replace 1623.45 tons of coal consumption per year. In addition, the power generation of the project will be introduced into the subway line network. Under the premise of meeting the annual electricity consumption of the vehicle section, the remaining part will be used for Line 5, and the annual electricity saving will exceed 400,000 RMB.

"Photovoltaic + transportation" has broad prospects

The completion of the Guangzhou Metro PV project is not a case, and the application of photovoltaic power in the transportation field is just beginning. Since general urban rail transit is equipped with large-scale parking lots, depots, ground and elevated stations, elevated sections, ground entrances and exits, etc., with a wide space for applying photovoltaic power generation systems, “photovoltaic + transportation” has great market potential. With the increasing diversification of photovoltaic power generation application models, various "photovoltaic + transportation" projects have become commonplace.

In December 2017,China's first high-speed rail line photovoltaic power generation project was officially launched, and a new photovoltaic power generation project will be built along the line from Jinan to Qingdao high-speed railway.

In addition, Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai Pudong, Beijing Capital Airport, Shenzhen Baoan  International Airport and other airports have built photovoltaic projects; Qingdao Railway Station, Wuhan Railway Station, Beijing South Railway Station and other railway stations have also installed photovoltaic power generation projects. These photovoltaic projects are not only built on the roof, the ground, but also installed on the curtain wall. The photovoltaic system can also be installed on vehicles or even on the road.

In December 2017, the first domestic photovoltaic road was put into use in Jinan, causing heated discussion among the whole people. The appearance of photovoltaic roads has made people see the broad application prospects of PV, especially in the idealized situation, new energy vehicles driving on this section can be wirelessly charged, which not only coincides with the development of new energy vehicles instead of fuel vehicles in the future. Trends, and put forward an important plan to solve the problem of the renewal of new energy vehicles.

On the other hand, in the era of rapid development of new energy vehicles, the demand for charging piles is largely released. If the future photovoltaic roads can be combined with charging piles, it will bring new opportunities for the development of new energy vehicles and photovoltaic power generation.

It can be seen that not only the roof can be installed with a photovoltaic system, but also the glass wall, the roof and the road surface can be the carrier of the photovoltaic system. The market prospect of “photovoltaic + transportation” is not too big. This is a great opportunity for the photovoltaic industry, but also for the booming new energy vehicles.

Are new energy vehicles really clean?

In recent years, as the pollution problem of fuel vehicles has gradually been taken seriously, countries around the world have successively issued timetables for the ban on fuel vehicles. The elimination of fuel vehicles by new energy vehicles has long been the trend. The data shows that from January to November 2018, the cumulative output of new energy passenger vehicles inChinareached 848,001 units, an increase of 86.64% year-on-year. The new energy vehicle market ushered in the peak season of the automobile market.

However, in a bright future, new energy vehicles still face two major difficulties.

The first is the endurance problem, which is the biggest shortcoming of new energy vehicles relative to fuel vehicles. Although the power battery used as the power source of new energy vehicles is developing rapidly, it is limited by the energy density bottleneck. The endurance of new energy vehicles is always a big problem.

The second is that the construction speed of charging piles cannot keep up with the development of the industry. The reason why fuel vehicles do not have the possibility of endurance is mainly relying on the ubiquitous gas stations in the world. As a "gas station" for new energy vehicles, the construction speed of charging piles can not keep up with the development speed of the industry. In other words, the owner of a new energy vehicle may face a powerless charge.

In addition to the above two difficulties, there is a deeper question that is thought-provoking. Is the new energy vehicle really clean?

The reason why new energy vehicles are separated from fuel vehicles is not the difference between burning electricity or burning oil, but whether there is pollution to the environment. In other words, the source of power is not important. What matters is whether it will pollute the environment. It is already a consensus that fuel vehicles generate exhaust gas and pollute the air. However, if new energy vehicles burn electricity and do not generate exhaust gas, they will not pollute the environment. The answer is obviously no.

Although the new energy vehicle does not generate exhaust gas, if the electricity it uses comes from thermal power generation, the earth's environment will still be polluted in order to maintain the operation of the vehicle. At present, except for a few countries, most of the world's electricity sources are thermal power generation, and thermal power generation often comes from coal combustion, which has a huge impact on the global environment. Therefore, only when the power of new energy vehicles is derived from clean energy generation, it is a matter of course for the elimination of fuel vehicles. Only cars that use clean energy to generate electricity as a source of power meet the expectations of new energy vehicles.

However, in terms of the current global power structure, most of the so-called "new energy vehicles" are not powered by clean energy. If this status quo cannot be changed, there is no essential difference between new energy vehicles and fuel vehicles.

Photovoltaic power generation is the hope of the future

When new energy vehicles face these difficulties, the emergence of photovoltaic power generation can not only transform new energy vehicles into real clean energy vehicles, but also expand the model of “photovoltaic + transportation” to solve the problem of new energy vehicles. The solution mainly has the following aspects.

1. "Photovoltaic + charging pile" to ensure clean power supply

The combination of photovoltaic + charging piles has already been practiced, but it has not been promoted and valued. Since the charging speed is longer than that of the fuel car, a "charged pile cluster" that can satisfy the charging of multiple new energy vehicles at the same time requires a large area. In such a large area, it is possible to build a "photovoltaic carport", which not only ensures the supply of clean energy for charging piles, but also provides shade for the car to be charged, avoiding the danger of rainwater charging.

2. Photovoltaic roads may break the dilemma of new energy vehicles

At present, photovoltaic roads have been applied in many countries around the world.China's first photovoltaic road was also officially built last year. Although there are still many problems, it is a good start. The design of photovoltaic roads that can charge vehicles on the road may completely break the life cycle of new energy vehicles.

Wireless charging is no longer a new thing. Now there are mobile phones that support wireless charging. Since mobile phones can achieve wireless charging, new energy vehicles should also be able to. For new energy vehicles, if you can get power replenishment while driving, then life will no longer be a problem. As long as this idea can be successful, the future new energy vehicles can travel across provinces and even across borders.

In addition, small PV systems can be loaded on the car roof to replenish the electric power.
